Sam Hunt’s “Walmart” Meaning

“Walmart” is a pretty honest song from the perspective of a man who just discovered that his ex, whom he “hadn’t seen… in years”, has since then begun to start a family. Or in the very least she’s had a daughter, who Sam runs into alongside the girl’s grandmother, i.e. his ex’s mother, “at Walmart”.

And the reason this piece is realistic is because for the most part, the vocalist does keep things in perspective. For instance, he apparently marvels over the child and especially how much she resembles her mother. Indeed by the looks of things the grandmother didn’t even have to tell him whose daughter it is, as he was able to notice on his own.

And what makes the piece honest, that by and large Sam does admit that he has gotten over said ex, that addressee. Yet at the same time, now seeing that she’s actually had a child does garner an emotional response, in that in his heart of hearts Sam was hoping that she was still in love with him, i.e. the type of sentiments that were expressed when they actually broke up.

So clearly, their relationship was profound enough that the vocalist will always have some kind of feelings for the addressee, whether he realized this beforehand or not. But now he has solid, physical proof that life has indeed gone on since they parted ways.

“I saw your momma at Walmart with your little girl
She had your eyes and your smile
She had your nose and your lips”
