“Can’t Let You Go” by Ali Gatie

Ali Gatie’s “Can’t Let You Go” is one of those songs where the primary sentiment is exactly as the title indicates. Ali is addressing a romantic interest, who would be his ex-girlfriend.

This is more or less made evident during the first two lines of the song, where he asserts that he has “tried” and even now is in the process of attempting to let her go. And later in the verse he confirms that they are no longer together, albeit obviously via no will of his own.

In fact when she left, metaphorically speaking she took the sunshine out of his life with her also.

So dude has made some attempts to get over here. This includes, as implied in the pre-chorus, trying to forget about her altogether. But such attempts have proven futile. And overall, as revealed in the chorus, he doesn’t regret his current disposition. That is to say that he is not beating up on himself for not giving up on the woman he loves, even if at the end of day he does not achieve said goal.  That is how much he loves her.

Indeed the chorus illustrates said love is not only manifest in the singer’s commitment to what appears to be a dead relationship but also the fact that he is emotionally devastated after losing the apple of his eye.

Verse 2

In the second verse, the vocalist sort of hints at the idea that his ex did him dirty. At one point in time she was his reason to live, so to speak.  But “after it all” came crashing down, she ‘left him with scars and said she was never involved’.

That sounds like she treated him as if they were never in love in the first place. And she knew that, well, he is in fact the sensitive and naïve type, especially in regards to his relationship with her. But she capitalized on such by deceiving him, apparently along the lines of convincing the singer that she was more committed than she actually was.

And whereas he may have been “weak” he wasn’t stupid, as in Ali ‘knew she was lying’.  But at the end of the day he lacked the “courage to leave” just as now, even after being cut off, he apparently lacks the wherewithal to move on.

And yes, despite admitting that he feels used and abused, the singer still isn’t prepared to let go. And after once again going through the choruses he concludes the song with some Arabic lyrics, which when translated apparently feature the vocalist begging homegirl to take him back – or some sentiment along those lines.

Conclusion

So to some listeners, the singer may come off as sounding a bit pathetic. But any dude who has actually been dumped by the woman he loves will understand what he’s going through.

He kinda knew the relationship was over even before it ended or at least that she wasn’t treating him properly. And now in the aftermath of it having come to an end regardless, in the back of his mind he wishes he could just walk away.

But alas, he simply does not possess the strength to do so. That is because his love for his ex and emotional dependency on her is so strong that basically he cannot perceive having a productive life without her by his side.

At the time of the release of “Can’t Let You Go”, which was on 12 March 2021, Genius and apparently Wikipedia recognizes said project as a full-length. But according to other reports coming out at the time, it will rather be an EP. This confusion is apparently due to the fact that the undertaking only consists of 10 songs.
