“Emo Song” by Beabadoobee

“Emo Song” is one of the more-complex songs on Beabadoobee’s album, “Fake It Flowers”. For the most part, as evident in the second verse, it appears that she is addressing a romantic interest. And it would further appear that this individual hurt her ‘emotionally’ in the past. Not only that but through her interactions with men since she “was young”, Beabadoobee has developed a significant amount of distrust for them. And considering that the addressee is also someone who ‘lies’, she’s not really entertaining the idea of letting him back into her life.

And one of the main purposes of this tune is to not only let him know how she feels but also that she still blames him for a certain degree of unhappiness in her life.

Beabadoobee talks about “Emo Song”

Bea has revealed that this song’s lyrics are about her challenging childhood and the effects it had on her as a teenager.

Emo Song

Bea’s troubled young life

Beabadoobee had a challenging childhood. Before attending the Hammersmith Academy to finish her 13th year, the singer was expelled from her previous school, Sacred Heart High School. Despite arguing that she made the right grades needed to for her to pass, other reports have suggested that she was dismissed due to poor grades. She was further accused of exhibiting bad behaviors which was also a reason why she was dismissed.

The singer was affected by her dismissal from the school, which she had described as “illegal”. According to her, the school didn’t like her, and though she made the grades needed to pass, she was still kicked out from the institution. In order not to feel depressed, Beabadoobee decided to learn how to play the guitar in addition to the violin. It was through this that she wrote her first single. After posting her song online, she said she wanted to prove a point to her friends and doubters.

In one of her interviews, the singer recalled how she got caught up in drugs and alcohol after finding herself in the midst of bad friends. According to her, she had no particular reason for doing that and only wanted to have a feel of something. She also described her teen life as crazy after indicating that she spent every day of the summer drinking when she was around 15 or 16 years old. These experiences, she explained, had played a part in her musical career.
