The Way Things Go

Lyrics of “The Way Things Go”

The lyrics of this song aren’t complicated, but at the same time they read as if a lot is being said in-between the lines. What has been put forth is that this piece has actually been inspired by a love triangle sorta thing, whereas a guy that Beabadoobee was dating by the name of Soren has since left her and proceeded to date one of her friends named Fiona.

But in any event, the wording of this piece doesn’t rely on namedrops or anything like that. Instead, premise-wise, it reads like the case of a girl being disappointed by a boyfriend who has proven unfaithful.

And where the titular phrase comes into play is with the vocalist, in response, deciding to adopt a que-sera-sera type of attitude. Or put otherwise, as presented Bea is not letting this situation get her bent out of shape.

Her stating in the outro that she “don’t mind” may be a bit of a stretch, as earlier for instance Bea contrarily puts forth that ‘there’s too much on her mind’. Also there are certain instances which will make her think about the addressee nonetheless, such as when she passes by his house. But at the same time, it’s obvious that she hasn’t been emotionally devastated by the whole ordeal, with the vocalist even going on to state in the second verse that she’s “happy now”.

“Can’t remember how to say your name
Let alone count all the freckles on your face
A distant memory I used to know
Oh, I guess that’s just the way things go
Oh, I guess that’s just the way things go
Can’t remember when you said you called
Miles away, and it was still my fault
The love you said you had, it sometimes showеd
Oh, I guess that’s just the way things go
Oh, I guess that’s just thе way things go”

And to reiterate, it’s as if more than anything else, Beabadoobee has been disappointed by the addressee, and now her perception of him has changed, as if he’s a lowlife or sellout or something. The lyrics don’t get too specific in terms of what actually happened between the two of them, but that disposition may explain why she isn’t too much in her feelings.

So what is made obvious is that in the mind of the singer, the addressee cheated and furthermore did so in a way that has caused her to totally lose respect for him.
