“Liar” by Camila Cabello

The lyrics of Camila Cabello’s “Liar” are simple but at the same time a bit-challenging to decipher. Apparently the theme it is based on is the singer falling in love, despite her desire not to. She is not privy to the idea of being smitten and may have even expressed such a sentiment verbally. Thus the fact that she is now head over heels for someone has made her into a “liar”.   Or perhaps more specifically, Camilla has vowed not to get romantically involved. Yet at the end of the day she finds this particular person irresistible.

That is at least the interpretation of the choruses. When it comes to the verses themselves, that’s where it becomes challenging trying to ascertain the intricacies of what exactly Camila is talking about, especially at the beginning of the song and particularly in relation to its overall theme.

But perhaps, considering the nature of the second verse, “Liar” is based on an illicit affair. In other words, the reason she is not keen on the idea of getting into a relationship with this individual is because she is somehow prohibited from doing so. Thus their interactions are more along the lines of flirting or being aware of each other’s feelings but not taking action. Ultimately though, at the end of day they indeed hookup. And if that is the actual nature of the storyline of this track, then the first verse would allude to the idea that they had actually been involved in the past but have not been with each other for a hot minute.

Lyrics of “Liar” are Autobiographical

So, this is a pretty-interesting tune coming to us via Camila Cabello. Like “Shameless”, the track she released concurrently with “Liar”, it is based on the idea of her being drawn to someone whom she apparently has some sort of reservations against actually getting involved with. Though at the end of the day, in both cases, trying to control herself proves to be an act of futility.

And Ms. Cabello has also stated that these songs “are basically the story of my life the past couple of years”. So perhaps what these type of sentiments are ultimately alluding to, somehow, is her current relationship with Canadian music star Shawn Mendes. In fact that relationship has been referred to in the past as being “flirty”.

Date of Song’s Release

“Liar” was released on 5 September 2019. It was one of two lead singles from Cabello’s sophomore album which goes by the name “Romance”. And the other song that was released simultaneously, “Shameless”, is a sister track to “Liar”. In fact Camila Cabello basically conceived both songs in a single sitting. Prior to the release of “Liar”, the song was first teased via Camila’s Twitter account on 3 September 2019.

Writing Credits for “Liar”

Camila had extensive assistance writing this song, with additional input from many a songwriter, including several famous names. These famous names include the likes of Lionel Richie and Jon Bellion.

Musical collective The Monsters & Strangerz also produced the song alongside the prominent producer Andrew Watt.

Is “Liar” really about Shawn Mendes?

We think it is very much possible that this song is based on Camila’s romance with Shawn Mendes, whom she has been dating since June of 2019 and is still with as of the release of “Liar”. Furthermore, Mendes is someone she has been associated with for a while before the two of them eventually became an item.

Music Video

Camila Cabello had tweeted that the making of the music video to “Liar”, which had Dave Meyers as its director and has been described as a mini movie, was ‘literally the most fun video she’s ever made’.

  2. Synopsis of “Liar”

Like other tracks featured on Camila Cabello’s “Romance” album, “Liar” is premised on the notion of the songstress losing control or forsaking inhibitions in terms of an amorous relationship with a romantic interest. And in this particular scenario, it is someone whom she has pledged to herself that she won’t go there with. However, when she actually gets close to this person, her resolve is weakened. Or as Camila puts it this person ‘makes her into a liar’, as she has stated she won’t do anything with him but winds up doing the opposite of this conviction. And all things considered, she doesn’t necessarily seem alarmed by the reality of this situation. Instead this track can actually be classified as a love song. But again this is not someone whom she wants to, in her mind, be with. Yet her inner feelings for him are obviously another matter altogether as, simply put, she finds this individual irresistible.

So in all, the songstress has pledged not to romance a certain guy but is once again made into a “liar” upon meeting him.
