“Hope for the Underrated Youth” by YUNGBLUD

This song espouses the titular idea of there being “hope for the underrated youth”. Based on comments Yungblud made about the meaning of this song as well as its lyrics, “the underrated youth” would refer to the younger generation in general who are compelled to adopt certain ideologies and images in order to conform to the overall society.

Thus this song more or less centers on his sense of rebelliousness. In the first verse he hypothetically questions what would his life actually be like if he conformed to what “the magazines say”. And in the second verse he gives us an insight into his countercultural personality, which features him making “friends with the dark parts… of (his) mind” as well as insinuating that mental-health treatments he has had in the past (via the administration of “Adderall”) have instead messed “up his personality’.

Meanwhile the pre-chorus and bridge are highly-metaphorical. But the sentiment they seem to be relaying is something along the lines of, similarly to the first verse, Yungblud insinuating that he is about to give in to the pressures of societal norms. And in that regard, when he questions ‘if he dies’, that may not be in a literal query but more along the lines of him equating (from a personally-symbolic standpoint) selling out to the society as being tantamount to dying.

And that brings us to the chorus, where Yungblud states that “there is hope of the underrated youth”.  All things considered, what he is ultimately trying to say is that younger people like himself should not give in to traditional ideas but rather speak out concerning what they believe in. Or as Yungblud has stated in his own words, “this song is about freedom of speech” and also “I believe the future looks bright because we are in it“.

So all of its philosophical inquiries, rebellious lyrics and metaphorical language all lead to the idea that “the underrated youth” should be proud of who they are, as they are bound to make a positive contribution to the days which lie ahead.
