Meaning of “You Broke My Heart” by Drake

Usually, when it comes to recounting his romantic history, we find Drake presenting himself along the lines of being a playa. But on this track, the primary addressee is rather an ex who ‘broke his heart’, and accordingly Drizzy comes off as being just as emotionally vulnerable as the next man.

What’s being put forth is that the addressee “f*-ked somebody” else, i.e. cheated on Drake by sleeping with another guy. But there’s more to it than that.  For instance, the third verse implies that their breakup wasn’t a peaceful one, and that in the process homegirl tried to hurt Drizzy even more by “digging up dirt” on him or, put otherwise, trying to ruin his reputation.

It’s also stated or insinuated that his ex is dishonest, ungrateful, immature, etc. And apparently Drake was able to perceive some of these signs beforehand – having had his “doubts… from the start” – but was smitten by homegirl’s “drum body” and subsequently fell in love.

So by the time all is said and done, ” You Broke My Heart” reads like the genuine gripings of a man who feels as if he had been done dirty by his girlfriend. In the aftermath, his feelings permeate more with vengeance and hatred towards her that they do with emotional pain per se, which is why the thesis sentiment of the song actually revolves around the rapper cursing his ex.

But to note, the second verse deviates from the main storyline and instead finds Aubrey touting his lyrical skills and street toughness. And it’s worth pointing out that in the bridge, Drake does allude to the addressee being a real-life ex, albeit one who obviously isn’t famous.
