“On Guard” by Lauren Jauregui (ft. 6LACK)

Most simply put, the vocalist in this case is not a gullible female. Rather, she comes off as being both analytical and experienced in the game of the romance. Therefore if some guys decides to kick it to Lauren, he shouldn’t look forward to any type of hit-and-run type of situation. 

And that is because the singer is specifically “on guard” against the prospect of falling in love with someone like a playa. So the implication is that a guy would really have to prove himself before being the full recipient of her love.

Meanwhile 6lack further drives the notion home, in an indirect sort of way, that such a disposition is in fact the result of having his heart broken. So now he too is “on guard” against the types of ladies that may end up playing him by the time all is said and done.

So at the end of the day this is a pretty straightforward song, and one may say advisory even, though it doesn’t really go there. But what’s being implied is that if the singers knew then what they know now, that romantic interests have to be vetted, then perhaps that knowledge would have saved them from some heartbreaks of the past.

Interesting Facts

Lauren Jauregui is a product of Fifth Harmony, a 2010s girl group that also produced, most notably thus far, Camila Cabello and Normani. Lauren has been dropping solo music since around the time Fifth Harmony went on indefinite hiatus in the late 2010s. 

And thus far the most successful single in her discography is actually her first, a collaboration with Steve Aoki entitled “All Night” (2017).

Lauren Jauregui’s collaborator this time around is 6lack, an up-and-coming rapper from the ATL who already has a couple of studio albums under his belt. And to note, this is their first collaboration.
