“Imported” by Jessie Reyez & 6LACK

“Imported” is based on the romantic tension between Canadian singer Jessie Reyez and Atlanta-based rapper 6lack. The main reason they are having a hard time hooking up is that Reyez in particular is in love with someone else. So 6lack plays the role of the guy who is trying to make her forget about the dude and instead get with him. However, Jessie’s disposition borders along the line of being reluctant to get romantically involved since she is still recuperating from a broken heart.

6lack lets it be known practically from the jump that his intentions are intimate. He wants to get Reyez in the sack. However, he also acknowledges that she has a significant other. And due to his “moral” code, he feels semi-reluctant to go any further. But ultimately he does not let the fact that she is involved with someone else derail him. Rather he stays focused on his goal of getting Jessie in bed, appealing to her with his wealth and the promising that he can make her forget about her man.

Meanwhile Reyez seemingly meets up with him, gets drunk and indeed engages in an intimate encounter with him. She has regrets about engaging in such an action. And she acknowledges that she made this decision based on the advice of a friend. However, she also marvels at the fact that it is taking her so long to put a broken heart behind her.

Yet simultaneously in the chorus, Reyez also plays the role of someone who is also ‘helping’ her intimate liaison get over his “someone else”. So at the end of day, she and 6lack portray similar characters. They have met someone who they are interested in who apparently is already in a relationship, albeit an anguished one. And they offer themselves as the solution to help the other get over that romance.  However, Reyez seemingly also warns the guy she is sleeping with that he should beware of becoming too attached.
