“Phone Numbers” by Dominic Fike

The central theme of “Phone Numbers” is Dominic Fike’s resolution to intentionally avoid getting involved with certain people who try to maintain contact with him. The title is derived from the idea that the singer “switch(es) phone numbers like clothes”, as in he regularly changes his line to evade communicating with the aforementioned individuals.

And Dominic’s decision to dodge these people is not solely based on an attempt to avoid sharing his newfound wealth with them, as he also paints some of these persons as not having his best interests in mind.

Lyrics of "Phone Numbers"

Indeed he doesn’t necessarily come off as being greedy. He comes off more like a young man who is enjoying his riches and is not overly interested in the idea of “sharing cake” with those who aren’t entitled to a slice.

Most of the lyrics which comprise the verses are actually dedicated to Fike’s recent ascension into becoming a pop music celebrity. And how he seemingly relates this experience to the overall theme of the song is that he does not really want to maintain contact with associates who were not able to keep up with his progress.

So in a way yes, Dominic Fike is behaving cruelly in this song. It is clear that at certain points he is referring to people whom he had a relationship with that he just doesn’t want to deal with anymore since blowing up. But he also alludes to new people that he meets whom he does not desire to actually build a bond with, even though they would like to get close to him. And the foundation of his gripe seems to be the singer perceiving that maintaining a relationship with these individuals is unconstructive. Indeed for the most part what they seem to be interested in is ‘breaking bread with him’, which implies that their main interest is partaking of his wealth.
