“Play This When I’m Gone” by Machine Gun Kelly

This is another emotional track from Machine Gun Kelly, this time around being dedicated to his daughter. And he is actually relaying the lyrics as if he has already passed away. Or simply put, this song serves as a message he is leaving behind in case he unexpectedly passes away, to let his daughter know that he indeed loves her. And apparently the reason the vocalist is compelled to drop such a track is because he understands that he may in fact pass away at any moment, especially due to his stressful lifestyle.

So he is recording the type of loving, inspirational, one can even say personal type of last words a father would want to say to his child, albeit relaying it through a public song.

This was a song MGK teased in late 2019. It was eventually released, via Bad Boy Entertainment, as part of his album “Tickets to My Downfall” on 25 September 2020.

The album also contains another very emotional track titled “Lonely” about MGK’s dad who passed away in 2020.

“Play This When I’m Gone” was written by Kelly in conjunction with its producer Travis Barker and the following:

  • Jackson Morgan
  • Pearl Lion
  • Dark Waves

Did MGK release “Play This When I’m Gone” as a single?

No. It’s album received the support of the three singles below:

Our Thoughts about “Play This When I’m Gone”

The theme and content of this song strongly reminds us of Eminem’s 2005 song “When I’m Gone“. Said Eminem classic was apparently written for his daughters to comfort them in his absence. It is very likely MGK was inspired by this Eminem track when he composed this. Heck even the title is almost similar!

Interesting to note is that MGK was a huge fan of Eminem before eventually going on to feud with him over a misunderstanding.
