PRETTYMUCH’s “Temporary Heart” Lyrics Meaning

This is a rare breakup track by PRETTYMUCH. And unlike many other pop songs based on a similar theme, the boys are not expressing any type of appreciation for a lesson learnt or fond sentiments for their estranged partners. Rather they wholly regret that the relationship ever occurred. Or as the lyrics put it, they greatly desire to do away with the “temporary heart” they have acquired as a result of this union.

What the titular phrase means literally is never stated. However, within the context of the song, it reads like a metaphor which symbolizes an emotion. And what type of emotion are we talking about? One in which the narrator fully vested his “heart” into a romance, thinking it would be long-term. However, he sadly ends up finding out it was just a fling which, once again considering the emotion put into it and disappointment felt from its failure, was not the intended result. So instead of having a physical shorty, the only thing the narrator actually possesses due to the romance is ‘memories’ of the earlier, happier days and ‘scars’ from the latter. And this is all ultimately due to, as the narrator states, falling for someone who does not truly feel him.
