“Say Something” by Kylie Minogue

The addressee of this track is a romantic interest of the singer. The lyrics are themed on the premise of the singer being someone who is searching for love. And now in her mind she has found that special someone. So on top of relaying her own strong feelings, she is also trying to ascertain how he feels about her. Or as the title puts it, she wants him to “say something” in terms of his thoughts on the two of them becoming an item. And outside of that narrative, the tune ends on a note in which the singer is apparently espousing the idea of universal love in general.

“Say Something” Facts

This is the lead single from Kylie Minogue’s 2020 project Disco. And the song was officially released as such by BMG and Darenote on 23rd July of that year.

The first time Kylie Minogue performed this tune live was on the 16th of September 2020 edition of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The theme and broadcast of this performance was designed to give an early-1980s, i.e. disco-era feel.

This track’s music video had Sophie Muller as its director. Its filming took place at a location in London known as Black Island Studios. And due to social-distancing rules as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, the video only features one other person besides Kylie Minogue. And that would be a British dancer by the name of Kaner Flex.

The producers of “Say Something”, Biff Stannard and Jon Green, also served as co-writers. And the other two credited writers would be Kylie Minogue and Ash Howes.

As Kylie Minogue recounted, the creation of this song was sort of a spur-of-the-moment experience for its composers. In fact “Say Something” came together during September of 2019, before the singer intended to work on an album.

This single charted in many nations, including the US, UK and Australia.

It should be stated that Justin Timberlake also released a song with this same title back in 2018.
