“Sunday Best” by Surfaces

Sunday best is a term which is applied to the best clothes in a person’s wardrobe, i.e. the ones he would wear only during special occasions. So based on how the term is metaphorically used inside the song, the general idea Surfaces is alluding to is that of every day being a special occasion in and of itself. Or even more specifically, individuals are tasked with adopting a positive disposition and making the best out of the day. Or as the duo puts forth themselves, they are “feeling blessed, never stressed”.

So the notion would be that their positivity is not founded on experiencing any kind of extraordinarily favorable event. Rather they have taken it upon themselves to maintain such an outlook ‘despite the challenges’ life may throw their way. And their cheerfulness is so strong that you can even say it’s palpable. So the intended purpose of “Sunday Best” is to impart such a temperament onto the listener also. In other words, they want the audience to know that negativity, so to speak, is inevitable. Therefore listeners should also actively dedicate themselves towards seeking out daily edification, even admidst such circumstances.
