Meaning of “The Perfect Pair” by Beabadoobee

“The Perfect Pair” is a pretty complex love song, speaking to the intricacies of being in what reads like a long-term romantic relationship between the vocalist and addressee. But as far as its thesis sentiment, what it appears to boil down to is the romance at hand having transcended its euphoric stage. And now, according to Baebadoobee, it is marked by “doubt”, “confusion” and a troubling lack of communication between the two lovers. But as the title indicates, she feels that she and the other are “the perfect pair” nonetheless.

It is safe to say the vocalist is not the type to think that having a partner with, let’s say romance-related personality flaws, means that the relationship should actually end. What’s more important to her obviously is the rapport they share. And as implied by the title, Baebadoobee also seems convinced that the solution to their problems would be more sensitivity and open communication on the part of the lover.

“If I told you, you’d know how to go and break my heart in two
‘Cause I would anyways, we’d end up like always
You know me, you better show me that you could say it to my face
‘Cause you know we’re the same, there’s worse things I can take”
