Meaning of “Time Machine” by Logic

The track “Time Machine” is based on rapper Logic’s desire to go back in time and prevent the death of a person who is obviously someone he still loves. Of course such is impossible, so ultimately he seems to more or less accept the fact that this individual is indeed gone – at least for now.

Who this person is is never specified, as in his or her relationship to the rapper. What does seem apparent though is that this individual died a violent death, as Logic recounts witnessing his or her “blood melt through the snow”, in addition to gun violence being a theme in some of his other songs.  Due to the ongoing grief of losing this person, he desires to build a time machine and indeed insinuates that he has actually succeeded in doing so. However, the story always ends the same, with the angel of death coming to claim the life of his loved one.

What makes matters worse is that this is someone Logic constantly thinks about. Indeed the actual event of his or her death is ‘burned into his mind’, meaning that it is something he cannot forget. As such, he continues with his fruitless effort of attempting to rewrite history to prevent what appears to have been a violent murder. And if he continues to fail in doing so, he is instead looking forward to reuniting with this person “in the clouds” as in during the afterlife when he too is deceased.

Did you even read the book? The song is clearly about one of the characters in the book? I don’t want to give it away for those who may not have read the book or who will.

The song reminds me of the movie “The Time Machine” made in 2002
