“Toxic” by Kehlani

This song is centered on a “toxic” relationship that Kehlani finds herself in.  She has a romantic partner whom apparently she quarrels with regularly.  Moreover she lets it be known that in regards to their association, she isn’t always an angel herself. And on that level, it seems as if she has already decided that she would be better off without him. However, getting straight to the point, she is addicted to having bedroom fun with him. Such an idea is pretty much what the entire second verse is based on. 

Moreover when she does decide to take a break, she tends to get intoxicated and get right back to ‘hitting his phone up’, i.e. calling him. So as aforementioned, this is a relationship she just can’t do away with due to some shall we say complex feelings for her boyfriend. 

Is this song about Kehlani’s relationship with YG?

And considering the lyrical back and forth she has been having in real life with her ex YG, whom she broke up with just about a month prior to this song being released, of course it has been speculated that “Toxic” is actually a recounting of certain aspects of their union. And if such is the case, let’s just say what Kehlani remembers the most about it is the arguments and the bedroom fun.

The song was released by Atlantic Records and TSNMI on 12 March 2020. It is expected to be featured on Kehlani’s forthcoming second album. Her hit single “Valentine’s Day (Shameful)” will also feature on said album.
