“Until I Bleed Out” by The Weeknd

There is both a metaphorical and literal storyline operating throughout “Until I Bleed Out” simultaneously. For instance, in the intro we see that the singer is “so paralyzed”, “can’t move” and is “terrified”. This harps back to the first song on “After Hours” entitled “Alone Again”. On that track, The Weeknd comes off as if he is in the midst of a potentially-fatal drug overdose. And he uses somewhat similar language between the two tracks.

But in the chorus of the song, we find out that the addressee of “Until I Bleed Out” is a romantic interest. In between these junctures he is telling the addressee that he wants to ‘cut her out of his mind’ and ‘out of his dreams’.  Well going back to the pre-chorus, he also lets it be known that he ‘don’t even want to get high no more’. So it can be said that he is speaking to two addressees at the same time. One would be his girlfriend, and the other would be drugs, which he concurrently personifies with the “you” adjective.  And in both cases, what he seems to be saying is that he wants to get them out of his life.

So succinctly put, in this song The Weeknd is seemingly singing about being in a toxic romantic relationship while he is also singing about being addicted to drugs.
