“We’re All Alone” by Dave

The title of this song(“We’re All Alone”) may sound philosophical, but it doesn’t come off like that per se. Rather, Dave uses the track primarily as an exercise in self-exaltation, though a good portion of it is also about other, more serious topics.

And it may not be that he intentionally tried to come off as being cocky, as the lyrics come together a lot like a freestyle. In other words, it would seem that Dave wanted to use “We’re All Alone” first and foremost to put on an impressive lyrical display. And to be honest, that is a goal that he accomplished. And when such is the primary purpose of the song, then rappers commonly do lean towards biggin’ up themselves.

But Dave is also a rapper who regularly mixes familial, empathetic and in some cases even religious lyrics into his songs. So it doesn’t really raise eyebrows when he makes a comment like “being rich when your family ain’t” is useless. Like you’ll rarely, if ever, hear an A list rapper stateside make an assertion like that.

He also expresses sympathy for struggling immigrants in the UK. FYI, Dave himself once was a struggling immigrant. And the struggles of he and his family went through is a recurring theme throughout the album this song is featured on. In fact such an idea is what highlights the second verse.

Meanwhile, as used in the song, the title actually serves as a means for Dave to give a shoutout, or let’s say relate to his fandom. And that’s because he shares common experiences, and also, as alluded to earlier, just seems like a naturally empathetic person.

So the same struggles they’re going through are also like his own. And again, this would be especially true as far as social outcasts such as poor immigrants are concerned. And considering that it is in such a context that he drops the full “we’re all alone in this together” phrase, i.e. in relation to his fandom, then such can also be deemed as the thesis sentiment, at least in theory, of the entire album.
