YUNGBLUD’s “Parents” Lyrics Meaning

Yungblud delivers a modern anthem for disenfranchised youth with the song “Parents”. He has a beef with the older generation, who are personified by the titular “Parents”. And he takes out the anxiety founded in this conflict basically by disobeying them. However, this song is not just about him being a d*ck.  Rather he perceives the root of the problem to be their falling behind in the times, hypocrisy and abusive behavior. Or put differently, he perceives their way of thinking as being outdated. He feels their actions are not indicative of people with upright character, which on the surface reads more or less like your average gender-gap beef.

However, Yungblud takes things to another level, as he implies the overall effect of dealing with such individuals is having a demoralizing effect on the younger generation, i.e. he and his peers. But despite them being at the mercy of such “parents”, he is still confident that they will “survive”. And according to his own words the inherently-espoused strategy is not to conform to the ideologies of the dominant society, if by doing so the person loses what defines he or she as an individual.

It should also be noted that the angst he is dealing with in this song goes beyond issues with authority and seems to extend to an overall feeling that his life is in jeopardy.

How this song was teased and promoted

Yungblud launched an innovative-teasing campaign on 21 May 2019 that included a telephone number which, once called, has the artist reciting the plot of the story told in the first verse of “Parents”. And the plot in question is about the singer’s father threatening to kill him if he is gay. Yungblud responds to this by forcing him to watch him engage in a homosexual act. At the end of the recording, he says “May 24”, which was the official release date (24 May 2019) of this non-album single.

However this song was teased as early as 14 November 2018 by Yungblud when he tweeted “your parents ain’t always right”. Interestingly, that phrase was actually the original title of this track.

Were YUNGBLUD’s parents very strict with him?

Contrary to what one may conclude by listening to the song, Yungblud’s parents were reportedly very-liberal and allowed he and his siblings “freedom to explore whatever they saw fit”. Rather the issues relayed in this song are based on opposition he met outside of the home.

Did YUNGBLUD write this song?

Yes. However, he was assisted in writing this track by songwriters Jack Tranter, Zakk Cervini and Chris Greatti. The latter two also helped him in producing it.
