This song has been described by one music site as being based on Lauv looking forward to the year 2021 after 2020 itself has proven unfavorable, particularly to people in the music profession. And yes he does seem, in the chorus at least, to personify 2021 as someone akin to a lover in his life. But besides such characterization in that particular passage, overall this song does indeed read like a love song. In other words, the lyrics don’t really have anything to do with time or years. Rather in the verses the singer seems to simply be addressing a romantic interest. And what the situation fundamentally reads like is she being dissatisfied with their relationship, and he accordingly making an attempt to convince her that he truly cares.
