The song “Can’t Have You” generally focuses on the trauma associated with losing someone we love because we took their love for granted. The songwriter tells the story of how he never thought his girlfriend could leave him, despite the many warnings she gave.
He later realizes that taking her love for granted makes him feel like a fool who does not deserve her love anymore. Although it’s too late, he promises to be more careful next time if he is ever given the chance to be with her again.
Even though the singer wants his ex-lover back in his life because he seems to have learnt his lessons, he does not want to cause her any more problems. At the same time, he expresses how badly he needs her by stating that he might as well stay single if he can’t have her.
