“Lemon Tree” by Post Malone

The idea that the title of this song (“Lemon Tree”) is apparently meant to point to is the vocalist’s life being sour at the moment. The first verse implies that part of the reason is that he is in some type of a toxic relationship with a loved one. The second verse reads as if the environment he currently finds himself in is a dangerous and challenging one.

But despite recognizing that things are less than ideal, Posty doesn’t come off on this particular piece as being pessimistic. For instance, in terms of his environment, he is confident that, based on past experience, that he will “survive”. Overall, what the vocalist is saying to individuals who give him a hard time is to chill out a bit. They have their toxicity, and his heart is “rotten too”. But he is able to perceive that some type of positive intervention is in order.

And what it seems is being relayed comprehensively is a notion like two wrongs don’t make a right. Or phrased differently, the vocalist needs someone to help bring out his good side as opposed to perpetuating the inner feeling that he’s cursed. And that’s because Post has personally resolved to “burn… down” the “lemon tree” and instead “grow… something better”, i.e. making a power-move to improve the course of his life.

So at the end of the day, Malone has decided to bring a significant positive change into his life.

This song describes him perfectly. I went to one of his shows in Atlanta, and I was thinking how can someone so positive make music this deep and at times dark and raw. It’s so inspiring to know there are artists out there going through similar things, and yet still choose positivity. His music got me through a horrible relationship through many albums, and I am so grateful for his music.
