“Look At Her Now” by Selena Gomez

Just about 24 hours before the release of “Look At Her Now”, Selena Gomez released another track titled “Lose You to Love Me”.  That song was about her being caught up in a toxic relationship and realizing that it would be best to let go. And “Look at Her Now” is the aftermath. She is addressing the same individual, who is now revealed to be “her first real lover”. And the timeline of the song goes as follows. Selena and this person fell in love when they were young. In fact they both served as each other’s first true love. But, as also pointed out in the prior song, her partner is unfaithful. And as a result her “trust levels went way down”.

Also on this current track, Gomez explains that the reason her boyfriend started cheating is due to “fast nights” which were part in parcel of his “new life”. Or another way of looking at it is that he blew up and started partying carelessly. And we can boldly interpret such as the meaning of these metaphors due to already concluding that “Lose You to Love Me” was about none other than Justin Bieber.

Indeed Selena and Justin started dating when they both were teenagers and remained in a sporadic relationship (just like the one detailed in this song) for almost a decade. And she admits, apparently keeping on the theme of unfaithfulness, that she too had a “moment” which she “still regrets”. But in summation, this particular romance left her heartbroken. However, she has come out of the situation “more of a woman”.

Primary Sentiment of “Look at Her Now”

Yes, becoming a stronger woman is the main sentiment of “Look at Her Now”. Yes, the singer went through a devastating emotional experience. But she emerged from it a stronger individual. In fact despite it taking her “a few years” to fully recuperate from the breakup, looking back now she feels like “she dodged a bullet”. This is another way of saying that she believes her life would be a lot worse if she had actually stayed in the relationship. Moreover she is supremely confident that she will acquire a new partner, if such is what she actually desires. 

So the implication is that for now the songstress is just chillin’ on the romantic tip. She’ll do so until she decides its time in her life to once again go down that road.

Release Date of “Look At Her Now”

Interscope Records released “Look at Her Now” on 24 October 2019, less than 24 hours after Selena dropped “Lose You to Love Me”. In fact according to Miss Gomez, the two songs actually form a cohesive narrative, with “Lose You to Love Me” preceding “Look at Her Now”.

Both of these songs appear on Gomez’s third album. FYI, as of the release of “Look at Her Now”, the album still remains untitled.
