“People You Know” by Selena Gomez

“People You Know” is yet another song from Selena Gomez’s “Rare” album in which she is speaking of a former close associate who is no longer part of her life. And yes, said individual can be deemed as a romantic interest considering that she specifies she used to spend “nights with” this person. But more to the point is her coming to realize that “people you know” can later be “people you don’t”. Or a simpler way of putting this metaphor is that the person you may be closest to today can be someone you don’t even speak to tomorrow. Or at least this is what Miss Gomez herself is going through in this particular situation.

But that being said, the implication is that the addressee, i.e. the friend she ‘no longer knows’, mistreated her when they were associated. And as such even though she is clearly “hurt” by their relationship dissolving, at the same time she is not making any effort to re-establish it.
