“Put It On Da Floor Again” by Latto (ft. Cardi B)

“Put It on Da Floor Again”, which came out on 2 June 2023, is a remix of Latto’s original “Put It on da Floor”, which was released about a month and a half prior. And this remix marks the first collaboration between the two vocalists, with Cardi being the more tenured of the pair.

Besides for Cardi B and Latto, the other authors of this song include the late Shawty Lo, K-Rab, Born Immaculate and Broderick Thompson Smith, i.e. the composers of early 20th century hip-hop hit “Laffy Taffy” (2005), which is sampled into “Put it on da Floor Again”.

The producers of this track – Ben Hogarth, Squat Beats and Go Grizzly – are also credited as writers. And the other authors of Latto’s remix are:

  • K-Rab
  • Tre Trax
  • Pooh Beatz
  • Randall Hammer

Additionally, a couple of celebrities – in superstar rapper Offset (i.e. Cardi B’s husband) and college basketball champion Angel Reese – make an appearance in this song’s music video.

Lyrics of “Put It On Da Floor Again”

This is a braggadocious rap song dropped by a couple of mainstream female vocalists, meaning for instance that there is a high lyrical emphasis on addressing their rivals of the same sex. Also, as to be expected, a premium is put on the vocalists’ self-touted ability to dominate the opposite sex.

So there really isn’t anything new being said here per se, though Latto and Cardi do drop a few interesting lines along the way.

For example, in the first verse Latto differentiates between “cheap ni-gas” and the rich ones by pointing out that the former would compel their girl to live in one location, while the latter grants the opportunity to move between cities at will. And the implication, of course, would be that she, due to her sexiness or what have you, only dates rich dudes.

Later down the line, B puts forth that she’s “ballin’ so damn hard, [she] coulda went to LSU”. Ballin’, in context, would mean that she’s on top of her game, i.e. enjoying a very-lucrative professional life and the personal luxuries such success affords.  But she uses that term as sort of a double entendre or metaphor if you will, as LSU, i.e. Louisiana State University won this year’s NCAA Women’s Basketball tournament.

And in keeping within that motif, as noted earlier the video even features Angel Reese, who happens to be the star of that team. And to note, later in the verse she also gives a shoutout to fellow music diva Britney Spears, besides the chorus firmly namedropping the aforenoted Shawty Lo.

“I done done it all (Tuh), feel like Shawty Lo (Tuh)
Laughin’ to the bank (Tuh), but s–t is not a joke (Tuh)
Say she got a problem (Tuh), imaginary smoke (Tuh)
Bi–hes said it’s up (Tuh), then put it on the floor (Tuh)
I done done it all (Tuh), feel like Shawty Lo (Tuh)
Laughin’ to the bank (Tuh), but s–t is not a joke (Tuh)
Say she got a problem (Tuh), imaginary smoke (Tuh)
Bi–hes said it’s up (Tuh), then put it on the floor (Tuh)”

Beef with Nicki Minaj

There has been speculation that certain lines of this song may serve as a jab against Nicki Minaj. This is specifically true with the ending of the first verse, where Latto notes, before closing the segment out, that an unspecified person very wrongfully thought that she “would kiss her a-s”.

Furthermore, both she and especially Cardi B are known to have beef with Nicki. In fact B’s drama with Minaj is basically such that an artist deciding to collaborate with either of them is akin to picking sides.

But that said, the nature of these lyrics, in their entirety, are more or less such that they can be levied against any of the vocalist’s female rivals. And on that note, it has been pointed out that a reference to Coi Leray which appeared in “Put It on da Floor”, which Coi did not particularly take kindly to, is not present in the remix.
