“iPhone” by Trippie Redd

It has been ascertained that the song “iPhone” is a come up song, i.e. one which for the most part is centered on Trippie Redd celebrating his success. That is to say that in his youth, he “never thought (he) would make it up out of that ghetto”, as he was facing, like the average ‘hood residents, a life of perpetual financial hardship.

But instead Trippie, ‘his b–ch’ and indeed “the whole gang” are now chillin’. And with that fact established, the second half of the track’s singular verse focuses on a couple of other different topics, including the gang’s wherewithal to effectively deal with opps.

But as for the chorus it is largely most about wealth, i.e. Redd “rolling around in a Tesla” and his “big brother” moving “kilos”, coming up in the game from a point whereas he “started from a… pebble”. And even though this all may sound braggadocious, the rapper clarifies that this piece ain’t about “no ego”. Rather, as stated earlier, Trippie is able to celebrate himself and his loved ones having made it big despite coming from a challenging background.

Song’s Title (“iPhone”)

Meanwhile concerning the title of this piece, even though the ubiquitous iPhone is not mentioned, such a reference apparently was inspired by the refrain. Said segment revolves around two statements, “call me when you want” and “call me when you need me”.

These phrases are sort of reminiscent in tone to the expression that Tyler, the Creator’s recent album, Call Me If You Get Lost (2021), is based on. However, an independent researcher over at Genius has noted how Lil Nas X also used these selfsame lines on his own recent track, Montero (2021).

But in any event, the title/refrain doesn’t, at least on the surface, seem to necessarily have anything to do with the thesis sentiment of this track, which is one again Trippie Redd and co.’s come up.
