“Suga’s Interlude” by Halsey (ft. Suga)

Like many other tunes which involve members of BTS, “Suga’s Interlude” is based on the idea of individuals pursuing and realizing their dreams. And in that regard Suga takes on the band’s usual role of encouraging listeners to persist in reaching their goals, despite obstacles which may materialize along the way. However, this particular song features a twist. For as Halsey reveals in the chorus yes, the artists have in fact realized their dreams. Or as she puts it, she’s now “having it all”. But apparently the fantasy of making it big was more joyous than the reality itself.

This is a point which Suga, who from a lyrical standpoint dominates the track, makes more evident during his second verse. However, what he is basically saying is that no matter what, dreamers should stay focused and persistent. Indeed at a certain point it isn’t so much a matter of fulfilling a vision as it is “a matter of survival”. But this is not indicative of espousing passivity and blindly following a path that is not yielding happiness. Rather what he is putting forth is more along the lines of adapting and using “love” – another common BTS theme – to change the situation for the better.

But that being said, the song ends somewhat inconclusively. Halsey is still contemplating “giving it up”, as in forsaking her current lifestyle. For she no longer relishes the pursuit of what she had previously perceived to be her destiny, in spite of apparently having reached her material goals.
