They used to meet each other on the “East Side” where the sun didn’t set. The east is where the sun rises, where new possibilities are born. You can’t see the end of the day, or in this case, the course of a relationship over time. They couldn’t realistically see where running away would lead them. They only dreamed about possibilities. She’s reminiscing about how innocent their dreams were at first. The time when they felt like “WE CAN DO ANYTHING IN THE CITY WHERE THE SUN DON’T SET”.
So therefore they ran away to be lovers. I understand that they were young and in love which leads to rashness, but they shouldn’t have fled into the night like thieves. I understand it’s easy to become so engrossed in someone because the sheer amount of chemicals released in your brain while you’re in limerence or love with someone is intoxicating. Feelings are intoxicating. I think they should have waited but that’s just a personal opinion.
