“More Than a Trend” by Roddy Ricch

After “Everything You Need“, “More Than a Trend” can be considered the second love song on “Live Life Fast”. And even though it does conclude with Roddy Ricch assuring the addressee, the lady he is obviously smitten by, that he can treat her better than other dudes, the lyrics aren’t necessarily romantic.

Instead they focus more on the addressee’s mentality and how the vocalist finds it wanting. Or put more plainly he thinks she’s too materialistic, having the tendency to jump from one man to the next based on their ability to spend high amounts of cash on her.

Of course Ricch himself is rich – a reality that likely afforded him the opportunity to pique the addressee’s interest in the first place. But now that he has caught her ear, Roddy is letting homegirl know that he doesn’t approve of this methodology of hers.

And yes, considering that many, if not most of Ricch’s songs feature him bragging about spending big money on women, especially if he really likes one, than this may be, all things considered, a confusing sentiment for some listeners to process. But apparently with this girl she has taken that ambition, i.e. materially profiting off of men, too far for his liking.

So maybe if we wanted to get a bit philosophical, we can say something like Roddy can accept a materialistic girl if it’s one he’s just having a fling with. But now that he has met one whom he actually has feelings for, you know, the double standard of love.

Song’s Title (“More Than A Trend”)

So by the looks of things, as alluded to by the title within the context of the song, the vocalist and addressee will never, in this lifetime, become “more than a trend”. Or put differently, despite his feelings for her, she is not someone whom Roddy can settle down with.

And we can reasonably postulate that perhaps she has already cheated on him, i.e. dated another well-paid guy after Ricch’s own resources were spent. So the way he sees it is that ‘maybe in the afterlife’, i.e. some alternate reality if you will, the two of them will actually be at peace and form a more meaningful bond.

And all things considered, well let’s just say that Roddy isn’t known for implying that cannot afford things, especially women. So perhaps we can take he’s speaking to a more macrocosmic, relatable concept in this case, as in portraying the role of a male who has fallen in love with someone like a gold-digger.
